Thermal printers for optical shop bills: 58mm vs 80mm, Bluetooth and paper

Opticdigit mobile printer with two pairs of eyeglasses

A printed bill with the customer's eye power is what makes an optical shop look professional at the counter. Thermal printers are the simplest way to do it: no ink, no cartridges and a bill in a few seconds.

How thermal printing works

A thermal printer uses heat, not ink. The paper has a special coating that darkens where the print head heats it. That means the only thing you ever buy again is paper, and there is nothing to dry out or leak.

For most independent optical shops, a 58mm Bluetooth printer is enough: an optical bill has a few lines plus the eye power, and the printer can sit anywhere on the counter.

What to check before buying

  1. It works with the app you bill from: ask the software company which printers they support.
  2. Battery lasts a full working day, if it is portable.
  3. It prints your shop name and GSTIN in the header clearly.
  4. Spare paper rolls of the right width and diameter are easy to buy near you.

Making printed bills last

Thermal print can fade over time, especially with heat, sunlight or contact with plastic sleeves. Tell customers to keep the bill in a cool, dry place, and keep a digital copy yourself. Billing software that saves every bill and can share it as a PDF means a faded slip is never a problem.

Every Opticdigit plan prints receipts to a Bluetooth thermal printer from any Opticdigit app. Premium Pro and Pro Ultra include a 2-in-1 bill and barcode printer, delivered with a starter pack of barcode rolls and stickers and set up with your shop's bill header; on Basic and Premium you can use a printer you buy yourself.
