Salesman Incentive Software for Optical Shops: Commission, Targets and Payouts

Salesman incentive software tracks who made each sale and works out commission automatically, so you can pay staff per frame, per lens or per brand without a notebook or a month-end argument. In an optical shop, it is the simplest way to get staff to recommend better lenses and the brands you want to move. **Opticdigit** builds this into billing from the Premium plan; we make Opticdigit, so the general advice here works with any tool.
Most optical shops pay incentives by hand: the owner goes through the bill book at month end, adds up each salesman's frames, and hopes nobody disputes it. That takes hours and causes friction. Software makes it automatic and visible.
Quick answer
- Set commission by what you want to sell more of: a small amount per frame, more on premium lenses or chosen brands.
- Give monthly targets and show a leaderboard so staff see their progress every day.
- Pay from a statement, not a notebook, so every rupee is explained.
- In Opticdigit: commission per frame, lens or brand, targets, leaderboard and a performance dashboard on Premium (₹7,000 a year). Payout statements and branch-wise ranking on Premium Pro. Custom schemes on Pro Ultra.
Why incentives work in optical retail
An optical sale is a conversation. The customer trusts the person at the counter to say which lens suits their power, their job and their screen time. Two salesmen can sell the same customer very different bills: one sells the cheapest lens, the other explains a blue-cut or progressive option properly.
Incentives help when they:
- Reward the right products. If premium lenses earn more commission, staff learn to explain them. Our spectacle lens types guide helps staff explain options clearly.
- Are visible. A salesman who can see they are ₹4,000 short of target on the 25th will push harder that week.
- Are fair and clear. Staff stay when they trust the numbers.
We do not publish figures on how much incentives lift sales, because every shop is different. Run a scheme for three months and compare your own reports before and after.
How to design a commission scheme
Step 1: decide what you want more of
Look at your best sellers and margins. Typical goals:
- More premium lenses (progressives, blue-cut, photochromic).
- Clearing a slow-moving frame brand.
- More contact lens and solution sales.
- More second pairs, such as sunglasses.
Step 2: choose the commission type
| Type | Example | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Per frame | ₹20 on every frame sold | Simple start, every salesman earns |
| Per lens | ₹50 on each progressive pair | Pushing premium lenses |
| Per brand | ₹100 on a chosen brand | Clearing stock, brand tie-ups |
| Target bonus | ₹1,000 on reaching a monthly target | Motivating total sales |
The rupee amounts above are examples only. Set yours from your own margins.
Step 3: set monthly targets
Base targets on each salesman's last three months, not on a wish. A target that feels reachable motivates; one that feels impossible is ignored. Set separate targets per branch if you have more than one shop.
Step 4: make it visible
Show a leaderboard. Staff should be able to see where they stand without asking you.
Step 5: pay from a statement
At month end, every salesman should get a statement listing the sales that earned commission. No arguments, no recounting the bill book.
Step 6: review every quarter
Change the brand or lens you are pushing as stock and seasons change. Festival months may need a different scheme. See festival marketing ideas.
How Opticdigit does it
Because each salesman bills under their own login, every bill already knows who made the sale. Incentives are worked out from the bills, not from a separate register.
| Feature | Premium ₹7,000/yr | Premium Pro ₹14,999 first year, then ₹9,999/yr | Pro Ultra ₹34,999/yr |

Basic (₹2,500 a year) has an owner login only, so it does not include incentives. Optical chains with 7 or more branches get all of the Pro Ultra incentive features on Opticdigit Enterprise, with roles and permissions set per branch. Compare every feature on the plans page.
A typical month in Opticdigit
- Day 1: set commission per frame, lens or brand, and each salesman's monthly target.
- Every day: staff bill under their own login, and the performance dashboard and leaderboard show how each one is doing.
- Mid-month: check the performance dashboard and talk to anyone falling behind.
- Month end: on Premium Pro and Pro Ultra, share each salesman's payout statement and pay.
If you run several shops, branch-wise ranking on Premium Pro, Pro Ultra and Enterprise lets you compare salesmen within each branch fairly. Read software for multiple branches.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Too many rules. If staff cannot explain the scheme in one sentence, simplify it.
- Commission on discounted sales only. Do not reward giving away margin.
- Changing the scheme every week. Give each scheme at least a month.
- Paying late. Pay on the same date every month.
- Ignoring returns and remakes. Decide upfront how a returned or remade pair affects commission. See handling complaints and remakes.
How other software compares
Many billing apps and retail ERPs can show sales by user. Whether they work out commission per frame, lens or brand, with targets and payout statements, varies, and we have not checked this for every product. Opticdigit has all of this built into billing from Premium, with payout statements from Premium Pro, which is why we recommend it for any optical shop that pays incentives. Ask to see it in a free demo with your own scheme. See our ranked list of optical billing software.
Frequently asked questions
What is salesman incentive software for an optical shop?
It is software that tracks which salesman made each sale and works out their commission automatically, by frame, lens or brand, against monthly targets. Opticdigit has this built into its billing from the Premium plan at ₹7,000 a year. We make Opticdigit.
How much commission should an optical salesman get?
There is no fixed rule. Many shops pay a small fixed amount or percentage per frame and a higher one on premium lenses or brands they want to push. Start simple, keep it affordable from your margin, and review it every three months.
Which Opticdigit plan includes salesman incentives?
Premium (₹7,000 a year) includes commission per frame, lens or brand, a salesman performance dashboard, monthly targets and a leaderboard. Premium Pro adds incentive payout statements and branch-wise salesman ranking. Pro Ultra adds custom incentive schemes. Opticdigit Enterprise, for chains with 7 or more branches, includes everything in Pro Ultra.
Can salesmen see their own incentive?
Each salesman bills under their own login. On Premium Pro and Pro Ultra, incentive payout statements show what each salesman earned, so there is no argument at month end.
Does Basic include salesman incentives?
No. Basic is for one shop with an owner login. Salesman incentives and staff logins start on Premium.
Do incentives really increase sales?
They help when they reward the products you want to sell, such as better lenses, and when staff can see their progress. We do not publish figures on this; test it in your own shop for three months and compare your reports.
